Farm to table

Some of the most interesting food in South Estonia comes from people who didn’t set out to run restaurants. They had a farm, they had good ingredients and at some point the two things came together. The result is cooking that’s rooted in a specific place in a way that most restaurants can only try to imitate.

Fish from Peipsi

Lake Peipsi is one of the largest lakes in Europe and has been feeding communities on its shores for centuries. The Old Believer villages along the western shore developed their own smoking and preserving traditions that are still intact – smoked bream, dried roach, marinated perch, fish soup made the way it’s been made here for three hundred years.

The Onion Road

The Old Believers who settled along Lake Peipsi in the 17th century brought their traditions with them and kept them. Braided onion chains hanging from the gates, pickled cucumbers, fish smoked over alder wood, samovars on the table.
Driving the Onion Road in summer doesn’t feel like tourism. It just feels like a road where people happen to live and sell what they grow.

Seto food

Seto cuisine has always centered on dairy, mushrooms and fish, less meat than the typical Estonian kitchen, shaped by Orthodox fasting traditions and by what the land provided. The signature dish is sõir, a pressed fresh curd cheese, not for slicing on sandwiches but served as a dish in its own right, eaten at celebrations and on ordinary days alike. Sõir carries an EU Protected Geographical Indication, putting it in the same category as Champagne and Parmigiano. Suulliim is a cold summer soup that sounds unremarkable until you try it. The food was traditionally slow-cooked in a wood-fired oven, and many of those methods have been revived in the last decade.

The best way to try Seto food is at a table in Setomaa, from earthenware dishes, with someone who made it.

The world's northernmost terraced vineyard

Grapes don’t naturally belong on an Otepää hillside. The latitude is wrong, the winters are too cold. Murimäe Vineyard has been proving that wrong for years, producing grape and fruit wines from local ingredients on a south-facing hill with views over the dome landscape of South Estonia.

In summer, Murimäe hosts wine dinners on the terrace. Book ahead. The evenings here have a way of lasting longer than intended.

Foraging

South Estonia’s forests produce chanterelles, boletus, lingonberries, blueberries and bog cranberries in quantities that feel almost unreasonable in a good year. Picking them is something people do in summer and autumn the way others go to the supermarket. You have the legal right to pick berries and mushrooms on any land in Estonia, including private property.

Chanterelles appear from July. Boletus and other mushrooms peak in September. Berries start in June with wild strawberries and run through autumn. If you don’t know your mushrooms, go with someone who does, guided foraging tours are available and worth it.

Scoop

Inspired by the spoon-like shape of our journey, Scoop is a carefully curated food route where every stop scoops up a new flavour, story and tradition. Discover authentic tastes, heartwarming hospitality and the untouched beauty of South Estonia.

It´s a journey through homemade farm-to-table dishes, craft beverages, and gourmet experiences, where every stop offers something unique – from masterful smoked meats to the wildest flavors of nature.
