Where you stay in South Estonia is part of the experience.
It’s not just a place to sleep.
It’s a cabin by the lake. A farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. A sauna you heat yourself.
South Estonia is close enough to Tallinn, Riga and Helsinki to visit in a day. And some people do – drive down, see Taevaskoja, have lunch, drive back. That works.
But the region rewards time in a way that rushing through it doesn’t. Stay in Tartu and the Haanja hills are an hour away. Stay another night and you can be in Setomaa by morning. The smoke sauna makes more sense after a full day on the trails. The second day is when you stop following a plan and start finding things. The unmarked road that ends at a lake, the farm selling smoked meat from a window, the trail that wasn’t in any guidebook.
Most visitors who come for one night leave wishing they had booked for more.

South Estonia has a lot of places to sleep. These are the ones we’d actually recommend to a friend.
