Family

Most kids’ attractions try to keep them occupied. South Estonia’s actually get them outside, climbing, swimming or asking why someone built an entire theme park around a clump of bog grass.

It works on adults too, which nobody warns you about.

Adventure parks & playgrounds

Climbing trails through the treetops, ziplines over valleys, theme parks built into old manor outbuildings. Most have a separate, gentler trail for younger children, so nobody’s left waiting at the bottom.

Spa & swimming

Some of this is loud – slides, splash pools, a flowing river built for an entire afternoon of screaming and getting wet. Some of it is quiet — a lakeside pool with views through floor-to-ceiling glass, built more for parents than kids. South Estonia has both, often within a short drive of each other.

Pokumaa

A theme park on the Võru-Põlva border, is built around a character that doesn’t exist anywhere except in a South Estonian bog. A poku is a grass mound that grows in the region’s wetlands – Edgar Valter, an Estonian children’s author, looked at the dry golden grass hanging down one of these mounds and saw hair. He wrote a book about the lively little creatures living inside them, first published in 1994, and it became one of the most loved children’s books in Estonia. The park is the only place in the world built entirely around that idea.
