Rõuge hill fort and prehistoric settlement

Rõuge vald, Võru maakond, 66298

The cultural layer of Rõuge settlement hid several ruins of residential buildings and a number of findings of household items. Subsequent to the settlement is a fortress that is situated on the western part of the natural small cape and where the residential buildings were located, but today, only the end ramparts of the fortress with ditches in front of them can be seen. During Middle Iron Age, people mainly subsisted on slash-and-burn clearance, cattle-breeding was less developed. Some examples of tools of local craftsmen were found among the finds from Rõuge; the finds can be seen in Võrumaa Regional Museum. In 1613, Rõuge is mentioned as a parish for the first time. The modern-day small town came into being in the 19th century.

Lõunalaagri hiking trail

The 2 km long hiking trail of Lõunalaager is established on the former grounds of the Estonian Defence Forces' Lõunalaager. In 1920, an impressive military complex was built here, where infantrymen practiced during the summer. Although nothing remains of the buildings, the shimmering reservoir among the trees, the old bridge, several foundation stones, and trenches speak of the realities of that time. Information boards provide additional reading about the past. It's an experience to perceive how quickly nature hides everything once made by humans. The Lõunalaager hiking trail offers a unique opportunity to combine a light nature walk with the heritage of Estonia's military history. The natural course of the trail around the reservoir and over the old bridge creates a peaceful, almost meditative atmosphere. The RMK campfire site allows for a rest break and, if necessary, camping. The trail is marked, and information boards help understand the area's significance in the history of the Estonian Defence Forces. Crossing with the shooting range cycling trail offers an additional opportunity for longer movement – thus, a more sporty day loop can be initiated from Lõunalaager.

Selgise cycling trail and Kärgandi campfire site

The length and terrain of the trail make it suitable for moderate training or leisurely enjoying the nature. The trail with its ups and downs runs along winding forest paths and straight forest rides, passing through different forest communities. The trail is 30 km long. It starts and ends at the Kukemetsa forest hut. The trail is marked with signs and runs along forest roads to the north. The best recreation sites along the trail are the forests, Selgise hills, Kukemetsa forest hut, which is approximately 500 m off the trail, and Kärgandi campfire site. The trail was built by the State Forest Management Centre.
