Monument to Johan Skytte

Lossi tn 15b, Tartu linn, Tartu maakond, 51003

Johan Skytte was a Swedish state official and a teacher and advisor to King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. Skytte was the initiator of the idea of establishing the University of Tartu, the creator of its privileges, and the first chancellor.The monument to Johan Skytte was opened on the 375th anniversary of the University of Tartu and is located in front of the Supreme Court building.The authors of the seal-shaped monument are Tiiu Kirsipuu and architect Ain Rööpson.

The National Piano Museum

The National Piano Museum is located in a special building - the historic Holdre Manor.The Art Nouveau-style main building, with its Heimat-style influences, was erected around 1910 during the time of Woldemar von Ditmar. Previously, the manor centre had not been built in a representative style. The architect of the building was Otto Wildau, who also designed the nearby Taagepera and Karksi manor buildings. The aim of the National Piano Museum is to collect as complete a collection of Estonian pianos as possible.By prior arrangement, we offer a musical guided tour with Alo Põldmäe, a composer, singer and music educator who is in charge of the Piano Museum.

We offer boat rental in Varnja village, which is located on the shore of Lake Peipus. Lake Peipus is one of the largest lakes in Europe and it is the favourite lake of many fishermen all year round.You can rent both motorboats and rowboats from us. The selection includes various boat models: Cursus440, Progress-4, Voronez, and Kasse. All these are suitable for managing the waves of Lake Peipus.In order to rent a boat you do not have to be interested in only fishing. Intsikurmu Song Ground

Many people in Estonia and beyond know the Intsikurmu Manor Park due to its tradition of fold song festivals. After all, the first song festivals in Estonia were held in Põlva in 1855 and 1857.The Intsikurmu Soung Ground is still a well-known location for concerts and celebrations. The stage can hold close to 3500 singers, the grounds can hold everyone who is interested in celebrating and dancing.

Kalevipoeg – War of Independence Monument

Kalevipoeg is the Estonian national epic about the adventures of the hero called Kalevipoeg.In 1950, the memorial Kalevipoeg, which was dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in the War of Independence, was taken down by the occupying power. The monument was built by Amandus Adamson. In 1952, the monument to Kreutzwald, the Father of Song, was erected at the same location. Discussions over restoring the memorial Kalevipoeg were held since 1988, but in 2002, when the exhibition ‘Kalevipoeg in Sculpture’ took place, the restoration proptly started. Sculptor Ekke Väli modelled the momorial on the basis of photos, and he was consulted by Endel Taniloo, a senior sculptor, during the restoration of Kalevipoeg.

St. Mary’s Church in Rõuge

The first stone church was constructed in Rõuge in the 16th century. In 1730, the original church, which was destroyed in the Great Northern War, was replaced with one which had an imposing square tower. The church was blessed in the name of St. Mary. The altar-piece "Christ on the cross" by R. von Mühlen is from 1854. In 1860 the walls were made higher and a mirrored arch was installed. In 1930 the church got a 31-register organ built by the Kriisa brothers. The first Estonian pastor in Rõuge was Rudolf Gottfried Kallas.Useful information! You can attend mass at the church every Sunday at 11:00 and in summer, the church is used as a wayfarers' church. Entrance to the tower is for a fee (grown ups 1.50, children 1 and family ticket 3 euros).
