Kristjan Jaak Peterson (14 March 1801 – 4 August 1822) was an Estonian writer who is considered to be the founder of Estonian national literature.He studied in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy of the University of Tartu from 1819 to 1820. He called himself a singer of the country people, appreciated the national features of literature, and thought that the creation of original Estonian literature was possible.There is a bronze monument to him on Toomemägi, which was completed in 1983 by J. Soans and A. Murdmaa, and a high school named after him in Tartu.On the writer's birthday, 14 March, we celebrate Mother Tongue Day.Fun fact: Peterson walked from Tartu to Riga more than 200 years ago due to lack of money.

The beautiful Luua Manor is home to the museum rooms of Luua Forestry School, which showcase the history of both the school and the manor. A number of the rooms in the manor have been restored to their original state and opened up to visitors. Here you can admire the timeless beauty of the manor, find out about the history of its park and the surrounding area and take a look at awards and old school documents. The central square of Valga is located in the heart of the city and connects the two sides of the city, Valga and Valka, into one whole. The central square offers the residents many opportunities for leisure, such as street basketball and table tennis. The unique benches and a colourful playground for children have become especially popular.Next to the central square are the Lutheran St. John's Church (1816) and the oldest building in Valga, a former administrative building of the county authorities.The central square was opened in 2018 with the help of the architects Gianfranco Franchi, Chiara Tesi, and Rea Sepping. At the end of 2019, the square won the annual award of the Union of Estonian Architects.

The Museum of Living History in Varnja is a permanent exhibition which introduces the life of the Old Believers in the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The museum examines the life of three villages in the Peipus area.The museum was created with love and it gives the visitor an opportunity to feel the centuries-old vibe.On request, the museum serves samovar tea and pies baked in a Russian oven. The exact price will be agreed upon with the service provider.If you wish, you can order a guide (20 euros). As the museum is small, up to 25 people can visit it at a time.

This memorial, which is dedicated to the freedom fighters of southern Estonia, represents the figure of an unknown soldier, his sword sheathed, with a flag held aloft in one hand and the other outstretched. The first memorial was unveiled here on 11 October 1925, dedicated to Lieutenant Julius Kuperjanov, but it was destroyed by Soviet forces on the night of 21 September 1940. The new memorial was inaugurated on 16 August 2013 in the original location on Kuperjanov Street. The design and mould of the memorial were made in 1925 by Amandus Adamson, who was also involved in the production of the bronze figure in Italy. This figure was restored to its original size by sculptor Jaak Soans. Restoration of the memorial was led by Major Meelis Kivi.

Leevaku Chimney, which is joked about as being the world's tallest sauna chimney (at 50 metres), was completed in 1923 for the local brick factory. However, the factory soon went bankrupt, as the raw ingredients being sourced locally were of insufficient quality. After the factory closed, the owner of the neighbouring residence built a wooden sauna in the chimney, and it is still used today.The chimney can only be viewed from the outside.

When walking in the Old Town of Tartu, head also for the other side of the riverbanks where you will see the early classicist Pistohlkors or Katariina House. It is a building from the 18th century that used to belong to Lieutenant WC von Pistohlkors. The interior design of the building’s hall in the style of Louis XVI is worth special attention. Tartu Town Museum is currently located in Katariina House.Interesting facts: - people know the house as Katariina House. There is a legend according to which Empress of Russia Catherine II (Katariina in Estonian) stayed in this house. However, there is no truth in the legend. - The house was designed by famous architect JHB Walter, who also designed the Town Hall of Tartu.

Construction of the Tartu Uspenski Cathedral started by the order of Peter I after the Northern War and it was consecrated in 1783. The church was established on the foundation of the Dominican Convent Church. It was initially built in the shape of a cross and was given its quadrangular shape in 1840. Interesting facts: - a chapel to St Isidor, who died as a martyr, was established in the church in the course of its extension; ‑ the Bolsheviks killed 19 innocent people in the cellar of Krediidikassa 80 years ago. Their victims, archpriests Bleive and Berzhanitski, are buried in Uspenski Church.
