Podmotsa Village Chapel

Setomaa vald, Võru maakond, 64018

Podmotsa Village Chapel is located in a small lakeside village in the middle of a medieval cemetery. The chapel, surrounded by lilacs and rowan trees, was built in 1760 and dedicated on Ascension Day. Because of this, it was built with young birches. There is a large stone cross near the chapel, as well as two smaller ones. According to local legend, these are the larger cross’s sons. Beside the cemetery is the village swing, and the National Geographic yellow window, which acknowledges a unique landscape. Walking down to the lake from the village, one can also view the Kolpino Orthodox Church, which is currently located in Russian territory.

The style is characterised by a high roof, symmetrical facade with stylised pillar motifs, including national ornamentation. The architects were Edgar Johan Kuusik and Anton Soans, the bas-reliefs were made by Aleksander Kaasik.Currently, the building houses an SEB branch office, the souvenir and gift shop Must Kass, and the editorial office of LõunaLeht.

Tartu Uspenski Cathedral of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church

Construction of the Tartu Uspenski Cathedral started by the order of Peter I after the Northern War and it was consecrated in 1783. The church was established on the foundation of the Dominican Convent Church. It was initially built in the shape of a cross and was given its quadrangular shape in 1840. Interesting facts: - a chapel to St Isidor, who died as a martyr, was established in the church in the course of its extension; ‑ the Bolsheviks killed 19 innocent people in the cellar of Krediidikassa 80 years ago. Their victims, archpriests Bleive and Berzhanitski, are buried in Uspenski Church.

Dr. Fr. R. Kreutzwald Memorial Museum

The museum features the home of Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald (1803-1882), a physician and the founder of Estonian national literature, in Võru and gives a good overview of his activities. His living quarters reflect the interior design typical of the time; the garden house accommodates literary exposition. In the storehouse there is an exhibition of art inspired by Kreutzwald’s writings, reprints and translations of his works. The stable features different vehicles and the fairy-tale room several ethnographic objects. There are also a cellar, sauna, well, garden and an arbour in the museum complex. The activity room is designed for handicraft, drawing and constructing.

Rannu Park and Manor Buildings

Rannu Park is a manor-era park partly bordered by a stone wall, surrounded by former manor farm buildings and a pond that once surrounded the vassal stronghold. The main building of the manor located in the park was demolished in the 1970s. There is still a gardener's house, a manor granary, a coach house, and some other buildings. A community centre has been built instead of the manor house. The park is for leisure, walking with children, and sports (volleyball, basketball). Here, you can still perceive the wealth of the owners of the manor and admire the magnificent landscaping. In the autumn of 2006, a memorial stone to the Battle of Rannu was erected in the park. In 2016, a bench was dedicated for writer Mats Traat.
