Suur Munamägi observation tower

Suur Munamägi is the highest peak in the Baltics, rising 318 meters above sea level. The 29.1-meter-tall observation tower at the top of the hill was completed in 1939 and offers breathtaking views up to 50 kilometers away in clear weather. From here, the true essence of Estonia’s landscape unfolds—vast forests stretching into the distance, shimmering lakes, rolling hills, and the scattered farmsteads of Old Võromaa. The views from the tower are different every time—spring brings soft green tones, summer a lush abundance of color, autumn radiant foliage, and winter paints the landscape with a fairytale-like white. This is why Suur Munamägi remains a unique destination throughout the year. Suur Munamägi has been a beloved attraction for over two centuries—the first observation tower was built here in 1812. The current tower is the sixth in its history; previous wooden or lower towers were gradually destroyed or dismantled. For this reason, the present tower is a historical gem of its own kind, combining both cultural and natural value.

Treski Village Chapel

The tiny Treski tsässon, or Orthodox village chapel, can go unnoticed as you pass by it, though it is located right on the road. The villagers say that the building was built around the middle of the 18th century. Treski tsässon's patron saint is St. John the Baptist, and so St. John's Day is celebrated as a village holiday. Unlike in the rest of Estonia, St. John's Day is celebrated according to the Orthodox calendar here, so 13 days later. It's held on 7 July, meaning the party will be held on 6 July. Treski is renowned for its cheerful St. John's Day celebrations.

Pühajärve War Oak

You'll need several people to measure the circumference of the ancient, nearly 400-year-old oak tree towering nearby Lake Pühajärv in Otepää! The trunk of this ancient tree has a circumference of 6.6 meters. It is called the War Oak because it has witnessed many historical events. Apparently, peasants of the Pühajärv Manor refused to work for the manor in autumn 1841 and the rebels were punished near the oak. The Pühajärve War was one of the first peasant uprisings against the landlords in Estonia, and in memory of it, an oak tree was planted nearby, where a memorial stone was erected on the 130th anniversary of the uprising. A beautiful park with walking tracks surrounds the tree today, and although the ancient tree is no longer in its full glory, it stands here to its full dignity, recalling times gone by.

Mikitamäe Orthodox village chapels

The square in front of Mikitamäe Culture House is called the square of Orthodox village chapels because two Orthodox village chapels are located there next to each other – the old Orthodox village chapel is the oldest wooden building in continental Estonia: it was probably built in 1694. The building was originally located next to the Tartu–Petseri highway. During the Soviet era, it was moved from there. In 2009, the chapel was renovated and brought to the square in front of the former town hall. In 1998, a new chapel was built. Both Mikitamäe Orthodox village chapels are dedicated to Apostle Thomas. The village holiday is celebrated a week after Easter.
