This building has hosted grand receptions of the nobility and served as a gathering point for student bodies. It was designed in 1876 by architect Otto Mohr for the Nolken family to turn an ordinary home into a residence resembling an Italian palazzo. A cafe opened on its second floor on 5 November 1957 and remained open until 1983.New life was breathed into the cafe in early 2005. With its six rooms, cosy corners, friendly staff and great music, it's a fantastic place for everyone!
During this workshop exploring the tea culture of the Lake Peipsi region, we will learn about the tea drinking customs of the Old Believers and learn about Ivan Chai (fireweed tea), how it is made, and the role it has played in Peipsiveere villages. The workshop takes place at the Varnja Samovar House, which is located in a traditional Old Believer dwelling. There, you can take a closer look at the use of samovars in households around Lake Peipsi, learn about their history, and enjoy tea with the Old Believers' traditional boiled sugar. Depending on the season, participants can also try making Ivan Chai themselves. In the summer, this is done together with the hostess of Mesi Tare, who guides you through the entire process from picking the plant to drying it. During the autumn-winter period, the focus is on Ivan Chai's history and use, discussing its medicinal properties, traditional tea culture, and tasting a variety of tea flavors. In the historic Deer Garden wine cellar, next to the Alatskivi Castle wall, a small family business, Alatskivi Manor Flavors, operates, producing handcrafted wines from local raw materials. The wines are made from products sourced from Estonian nature, such as rhubarb, wild berries, apples, and grapes, giving each drink a unique local character. In addition to buying wine, it is possible to participate in a tasting that introduces wines through a playful guessing game, in which participants try to identify the ingredients of the wines. The hostess also provides guests with a brief overview of the wine-making process and, if desired, introduces the historic Deer Garden wine cellar and its connection to the former manor in more detail. This is a cozy, personal experience that showcases local raw materials, craftsmanship, and the area's history.

We offer an unforgettable experience with a haunted dinner at Alatskivi Castle. Travel back in time to 140 years ago when the Nolcken family lived in the manor, and there was no electricity or modern technology. During the evening, the lady of the manor will move through the dark rooms of the castle, telling stories of bygone times and ghostly legends, because the castle is truly haunted! The experience includes a guided tour of the castle and a 3-course period-themed dinner, accompanied by a welcome drink. It is possible to order additional drinks with the courses.
