Church of St Catherine in Võru

Construction of the Church of St Catherine in Võru commenced in 1793 during the reign of Empress Catherine II. It is thought to have been designed by the Livonian architect Schons, while the man responsible for the building of the church was Võru's own Johann Karl Otto. The church was surrounded with a formidable fence. It is famous for its cross-shaped floor plan, substantial bell tower, high dome-like secondary tower and arched windows. Designed in classicist style, it was completed in 1804 in honour of St Catherine. The grounds around the church were restored in 2008 and are now home to an open air exhibition of religious text-themed illustrations by artist Marje Ernits.

Laskevälja Bike Trail

The 43-kilometer Laskevälja bike trail runs through the forested hills, salt marshes, lake views, and sandy areas of the Mustoja hummock region. The trail introduces the area's military history: in the 1920s-1930s, the Estonian Defense Forces shooting range was located here. The bike trail is a proper challenge even for a well-conditioned hiker: due to elevation differences and sandy roads, there are places where you need to push the bike alongside you. While the 17-kilometer section from Värska to Lõunalaager is quite flat, the return part of the trail is longer (26 km) and significantly more difficult. The starting point of the bike trail is RMK Värska campfire site, where there is a large trail map. In addition, we facilitate an organic transition between the hiking and biking trails to understand that moving on the trail is not just about sports, but also about discovering an exciting cultural history: in this area, nature and history met.

Estonian flagstaff in Otepää

The Estonian blue-black-and-white national flag waves in the highest flagstaff in Estonia – on the renewed Central Square in the centre of Otepää. Next to the flag are information stands with the story of the Estonian flag, and in the nearby Community Garden, you can learn exciting facts about the history of Otepää.The flag consecrated on 4 June 1884 was initially the flag of Estonian University Students, then the Estonian national flag, and when the Republic of Estonia was established, blue, black, and white were declared the national colours.
