Kallaste, located in southern Estonia, has been a well-known fishing town for decades, and one of the largest fish farms on Estonia's largest lake, Lake Peipsi, is located here. Lake Peipsi is one of the most fish-rich lakes in Europe, and we sell and process fish caught directly from the lake. The shop has a large selection of smoked and frozen fish and fish products guaranteed to make your mouth water. The selection includes perch fillet slices in red marinade, hot-smoked bream in oil, and tšugudai made from raw cod fillet marinated in vinegar and onion. One of the most important battles of the War of Independence took place near the Paju Manor on 31 January 1919. The Northern Sons Regiment that consisted of Finnish volunteers also fought for the independence of Estonia over here. The most legendary commander in the War of Independence, Lieutenant Julius Kuperjanov, was fatally injured in the battle. The battle memorial is a granite pillar on a three-level pyramid, which was reopened on the 75th anniversary of the battle on 30 January 1994.Interesting facts: * the memorial was opened by President of the Republic of Estonia Lennart Meri; * a memorial tablet to the Northern Sons who fell in the battle can be found on the wall of the Valga Jaani (St John’s) Church.

After the Second World War, the Baptist congregations in Tartu joined the only remaining Baptist church: the Kolgata congregation, whose chapel was opened in 1931.In 2013, the congregation moved from the old prayer house located in Karlova district to a modern church building (completed in 1995) at the edge of the centre of the city due to lack of space. The first service in the building on Veski Street took place on 10 November 2013, when the Kolgata congregation celebrated its 112th anniversary.The congregation belongs to the Union of Evangelical Christian and Baptist Churches of Estonia. Services in Estonian are held on Sundays at 11 a.m. and in Russian at 1 p.m.

‘Countrywomen’ is a group of sculptures by sculptor Mare Mikofi, completed in 1974, which has been on display at the Town Hall Square in front of the Tartu Art Museum since 2013.It depicts two women, the older one sitting and being content and exhausted, and the other, the younger, standing beside her, empathetically holding her arm around the older woman’s shoulder. The difference between the generations is strongly reflected in their clothing – the younger is wearing trousers, a light vest and platform shoes, and the older one is wearing a dress and an apron, leaving her feet bare.The installation of ‘Countrywomen’ celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Tartu Art Museum in the Leaning House.

The first stone bridge to be constructed in the Baltic States was erected in the 18th century at one end of the Town Hall Square in Tartu, with two triumphal arches and a raisable mid-section. Dedicated to Russian empress Catherine II, it was opened to traffic in 1784. The bridge was destroyed during World War II. All that remains to admire is the 2004 model of the bridge (created by Tiiu Kirsipuu).

Arch Bridge (Kaarsild) is a pedestrian bridge between the city centre and the Ülejõe district. It was built in 1957–1959 to replace the former Kivisild bridge, on the foundations of its abutments. Before the bridge was completed, a long rowing boat was used to regularly transport people over the river in the 1950s.The bridge was renovated in 2017. In the dark, the bridge is illuminated and additionally, musical works, accompanied by a light show, can be seen that are synchronised with the bell ringing of the town hall. The sound and light design is a unique public space project of its kind in Estonia.Next to the bridge, there is also a model of the Kivisild bridge that was destroyed in World War II.
