Karlova — a meeting place for architecture enthusiasts and bohemians

Päeva tn 25, Tartu linn, Tartu maakond, 50103

Karlova is a neighborhood in Tartu that captivates visitors with its bohemian atmosphere.
In Tartu’s Karlova district, there are historical wooden houses, secret courtyards worth discovering, unique cafés loved by locals, greenery, and plenty of street art.
In the heart of Karlova are several important community places – the cozy Karlova Kohv, the popular meeting spot Barlova Bar, and the Karlova Harbor area by the Emajõgi River, suitable for more peaceful leisure.
The neighborhood dates back to the houses built on the lands of Karlova Manor in the 19th–20th centuries, which have developed into today’s unique living environment. The oldest settlement, at the beginning of Kalevi Street, dates back to the 18th century and architecturally differs from the rest of the area.
In spring, Karlova Days take place, where you can get to know the neighborhood even better through various events and open courtyards.
Exploring the neighborhood with a guide will show you Karlova’s hidden side and the historical charm of its bohemian wooden houses. More information can be found on the Tartu Guides website.

The trunk has been filled with reinforced concrete. The Tamme-Lauri oak was named after Laurits, the god of fire, who was said to live in the oak and bring misfortune, but also sometimes good to the surrounding farms. The farm located near the oak is also known as Tamme-Lauri. The Tamme-Lauri oak was featured on the back of the Estonian ten kroon banknote. University of Tartu’s main building

The University of Tartu's main building is a truly remarkable and historically significant structure located in Tartu's Old Town. The building was designed by the university's architect, Johann Wilhelm Krause, and constructed between 1804 and 1809. It was inaugurated with a ceremonial event on July 3, 1809, and since then, it has been the central venue for the university, hosting all important celebrations, scientific and cultural events, and gatherings of the academic community. The main building's classical architecture, with its columned facade and dignified interior, has shaped Tartu as a university town. The main building houses the White Hall, where concerts, conferences, and ceremonial events take place. Another special attraction is the student prison in the attic, which offers an intriguing insight into the strict rules of 19th-century student life. Visitors can also explore the University of Tartu Art Museum in the main building. The main building can also be explored on a guided tour, organized through the University of Tartu Art Museum by prior appointment.

Kallaste outcrop

The longest Devonian sandstone outcrop in Estonia is located in Kallaste. The measurements done in 2001 show that the outcrop is about 930 metres long. The maximum height of the outcrop is 8 metres. Starting from the south side of the town and moving towards the central square, you can see 11 outcrops. When the water level rises during high waters, the waves chip away the outcrop, creating many caves in the sandstone. The largest of these are more than 1.5 m high and up to 6 m deep. The southernmost and highest outcrop has been under protection since 1959.According to legends, an ancient and magical smith used to live in the caves.
