Ilumetsa meteorite craters

Ilumetsa kuusik, Võru vald, Võru maakond, 64125

Meteorite craters are rare around the world. In Ilumetsa in Võru County, however, there is a group of craters formed from meteorite impacts which the locals call ‘Hell’s Grave’, ‘Deep Grave’, ‘The Devil’s Grave’, and ‘Ghost’s Grave’ (the latter three of which are overgrown and not marked). The biggest of the craters, which was formed around 6,600 years ago, is ‘Hell’s Grave’; it is up to 80 metres in diameter at its widest point, and 12.5 metres deep. The floor of the crater is covered in a 2.5 metre layer of peat. Hikers can find their way to the crater along a well-maintained boardwalk, passing intriguing wooden sculptures as they go. There is a forest hut with information boards at the mid-point of the trail.

Räpina flour mill

The longest river in Estonia, the Võhandu River, is calm when it reaches Räpina, and therefore it was probably the most suitable place for building a unique mill complex comprising three mills. The flour mill is a massive stone building with a large winch on the top floor for lifting bags. The original doors and many other details integral to the overall design have been preserved. The flour mill was built at the end of the 18th century.

This church, dedicated to the archangel Michael, was completed in 1785. It stands on the shores of a man-made lake in Räpina and enjoys beautiful views over Sillapää castle and park. The front of the church is adorned with sculptures dating from the time of its construction, which symbolise Hope and Love. One of the church's most valuable assets, the two-part altar painting entitled 'The Appearance of the Risen Jesus to Mary Magdalene' and 'The Burial of Jesus', was painted by Carl Antropoff in 1871.

Hellenurme Mill Museum

Hellenurme Mill Museum in Southern Estonia is the last operational historical watermill in Estonia and one of the few examples of a water-powered mill as industrial heritage in the Nordic countries. Visiting the mill feels like a trip back in time. Visitors can see century-old equipment across four floors of the mill, from the turbine to the milling machines and millstones, which still grind rye into bread flour. In the bread house, the mill hostess offers guests traditional Estonian rye bread made on-site and shares stories that bring the everyday life of centuries past to life. The large mill building of Hellenurme Manor, built in 1880 in Tartu County, hides surprises at every step. In addition to the working mill, guests can enjoy workshops and meals in the bread house. It is possible to stay overnight in the freshly renovated mill chambers, which offer views of the river and lake. Visitors can admire the lake's beauty and the surrounding nature. Here, you can also enjoy cultural events and celebrate festive moments with friends, family, or colleagues.
