Babelhouse day trip to South Estonia — discover Taevaskoja and Põlva

We organize fatbike hikes in Taevaskoda year-round. From spring to autumn, we ride along forest trails on the banks of the ancient valley of the Ahja River. In winter, we also stop by the ice of Lake Taevaskoda. The most famous places on the route are Suur- and Väike Taevaskoda, Neitsikoobas Cave, and the Kiidjärve water mill and manor park. The tour runs most of the time along beautiful forest trails in the varied landscape of South Estonia. The tour is suitable for anyone who is at least 150 cm tall. The pace is calm, and we take breaks to catch our breath and chat every 15-20 minutes. We talk about nature and local attractions. Taevaskoda has a rich history and cultural heritage; it contains sacred places and springs important to ancient Estonians. This area is known for its sandstone outcrops and magical forest trails. We use regular fatbikes and electric fatbikes (e-fatbikes) for riding. You can find clothing recommendations and information about the equipment you need for the tour on our website. The hike will last up to three hours. We will ice skate along the channels that are covered with smooth ice. We will also skate over/around flooded meadows, stop at beaver dams and otter burrows, explore animal tracks on the snow, and admire Lake Peipus as well. In the middle of the hike, we will take a short break to drink tea and have a bite to eat. If it is allowed to go on Lake Peipus at the time of the hike, we will skate back along the shore of Lake Peipus. The wetlands, bogs, and forests of the Peipsiveere Nature Reserve are rich in berries and mushrooms, and picking them has always been a summer tradition for Estonians. Led by an experienced guide with a forager's soul, we will hike to places where you can find Estonian nature's top delicacies, like blueberries and cranberries. We will learn how to find these berry and mushroom spots, what to pick, what to leave in the forest, and how to preserve berries and mushrooms for the winter. The trips take place from mid-July to mid-October. At the end of the trip, we will prepare a delicious dish from the natural products we have picked over a campfire in the forest. Go for a walk in Supilinn on the beautiful promenade along the Emajõgi River, where century-old trees and a tranquil frog pond give the city a breath of fresh air. Street art, colorful courtyards, and wooden houses tell Supilinn's story, which is best experienced during the spring Supilinn Days, when courtyards and gardens open to guests and the entire district turns into a large festival. The best way to explore Supilin is on foot or by bike, so you can notice hidden corners, shutter patterns, and backyard gardens. The Saatse Museum's main building was originally a residential building, then a school building, and now it's a museum. What makes Saatse Museum special are the texts painted on the wall and the opportunity to watch old film clips about the history and religion of Setomaa. The former classroom on the upper floor is set up in the style of the Soviet era. The museum has a spacious outdoor area and a small stage, so it's a nice place to have a picnic. A small hiking trail runs along the border and starts and ends at the museum — it can be walked even when the museum is closed.
