From Forest to Table in Tartu County

Tartu County, South Estonia’s pantry!

The food culture in Tartu County has been influenced by many other nations throughout the ages. Russians, Votians, Poluverniki, Setos, Old Believers, and Baltic Germans all left their own lovely touches on local food and dishes. Fish plays a huge role – most of it comes from Lake Peipus and Lake Võrtsjärv – but so does produce from the garden and food from the forest, which are enjoyed equally as much. And of course, Onion Route onions, loved across Estonia, are grown by Lake Peipus. If you want to get to know the special flavours Tartu County has to offer, come to Tartu Market or the Farmer’s Market of the Lõunakeskus shopping centre. It has a great selection of food from Southern Estonian farms and small producers.
