Vesioinad Tindiorus

Rõuge vald, Võru maakond, 66298

The best way to encounter the Tindioru water rams is to embark on an exciting hike along the Rõuge primeval valley trail. The water ram is a “perpetual motion” pump that uses only the energy of water and is capable of pumping water to heights of tens of meters. There are two water rams in Tindioru: the first was built in 1939 and the second in 2002.
The Tindioru water rams are rare tools that combine smart engineering and the interplay of natural forces. They can be considered a kind of symbol of Rõuge’s inventive spirit — a time when everything had to be built by hand and in harmony with nature. When the ice-cold spring water starts to make the ram buzz, the whole valley seems to come to life.
The sight is particularly enchanting in early spring, when the cold has shaped the water ram’s splashes into tall and marvelous ice sculptures. Glittering in the sunlight, they appear like fairy tale castles emerging from the earth.
The Tindioru water rams are a living memory of a time when water was man’s main source of energy — and proof that genius lies in simplicity.

Petseri Statue of Liberty

The statue for those who perished in the War of Independence in Petseri county stands on the Statue of Liberty Square in Värska. The monument designed by sculptor Roman Haavamägi was supposed to be erected in the heart of the town of Petseri in the summer of 1940, but due to the Soviet occupation that started, the plan was abandoned. Only 80 years later, in 20 July 2020, the restored statue was opened here in Setomaa. The soldier figure was modelled and shaped in granite on the basis of photos by sculptor Tiiu Kirsipuu. The Statue of Liberty of Petseri was erected in remembrance of those nearly 350 Estonian soldiers who fell in the War of Independence in Petseri County, as well as the importance of the Tartu Peace Agreement for the Setos.

Lake Pühajärv

Pühajärv, with its picturesque winding shoreline and four islands, is the largest lake in Otepää Nature Park. At the northern tip of Pühajärv, there is a beach area with a beach house, ball courts, a children's playground, recreation areas, a café, and a boat harbor. At the southern tip is the Kooliranna recreation area, and from there begins the Väike Emajõgi, which meanders through Valgamaa. Pühajärve Park is the starting point for the Murrumetsa hiking trail, and around the lake runs the 12 km long Pühajärve hiking trail, which passes by the lake's most famous spring, the Armuallikas. In winter, when weather conditions are suitable, an ice trail is created on the lake for hiking, and a winter swimming area is open at Pühajärve Beach.Pühajärv has provided plenty of inspiration for writers and artists. For example, Fridebert Tuglas and Eino Leino have vacationed here. Information about Konrad Mägi's Pühajärv paintings can be found on an info board by the lakeshore near the GMP Pühajärve restaurant. In 1991, the Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, visited Otepää and blessed the lake, an event commemorated by a wooden sculpture on the shore of Pühajärve Park.
