Kassinurme Hillfort and Sacred Grove

Jõgeva vald, Jõgeva maakond, 48425

The Kassinurme ancient area was established 1.5 thousand years ago.  The sacred grove was discovered when the settlement was established, and it is one of the oldest sacred places in Estonia. A fragment of the ancient fort has been restored. At present the sacred grove is the favourite place for history enthusiasts who organise ancient war games there, revive old folk customs, and celebrate folk calendar holidays. The health trail lets visitors see the varied nature of the region and enjoy beautiful surface forms.

Canoeing on the Kooraste lakes

The adventure on the Kooraste lakes takes place on 11 different bodies of water – lakes Vidrike, Voki, Lambahanna, Nahajärv, Sinikejärv, Lubjaahju, Liinu, Pikkjärv, Vaaba, Hatsike and Kooraste Suurjärv – connected by the narrow, winding Sillaotsa River. A primeval valley, beaver dams, and wild nature are just some of the things you will see and experience on this trip. During spring, there is plenty of water, but in drier seasons, there are some sections where you may have to carry your canoe with you. The lakes are normally warm in summer and perfect for swimming.We welcome families with children and groups of friends and colleagues. We organise trips for both small and large groups.

Helme caves

Located in the manor park of the same name, the Helme caves, are an unrivalled sight in Estonia. Situated to the north of castle ruins, the caves have a white Burtniek layer of sandstone walls standing 3 m high. Unfortunately for cave lovers though, some of the better known caves have already collapsed. Once comprised of seven interlinked chambers, the biggest of which was known as the Church of Moses. Peppered with springs, the caves have a long history; and over the years they have been dug out and used as shelters when needed. Did you know...?: In ancient times the Helme caves were also known locally as the gateway to Hell.Kivialune (under the rocks) was a shelter for Old Estonians during the wars.

Kalevipoeg Museum

The Kalevipoja Museum, located in Jõgeva County, Kääpa, is named after the Estonian national epic "Kalevipoeg". In the nearby river lies the sword of Kalevipoja, and around it lie the resting places, stones, springs and furrows of the ancient sangari. This is where you can start a real journey into the world of the Estonian national epic! The museum's permanent exhibition gives an overview of the epic, and you can learn about the most important events in a playful way. Anyone who wishes can listen to the epic as an audiobook or sit in the "Plane" and watch a short film about places in Estonia related to Kalevipoja. Monument to Peeter Põld

The monument to Peeter Siegfried Nikolaus Põld (1878–1930), the first Minister of Education and founder of the national university of Estonia, the first professor of pedagogy, was unveiled in front of the Ministry of Education and Research on 1 December 2008.The authors of the monument are sculptor Ekke Väli and architect Ain Rööpson.Under the name of Peeter Põld Day, student scientific conferences have been organised at the University of Tartu since 2008, and on the same day, the university issues a scholarship named after him.
