Located on the slope of Tartu's Toome Hill Park, the Gunpowder Cellar is a unique historical building that today operates as a restaurant. The building was established in 1767 in a moat separating the bishop's castle from the surrounding area, and it was used as a gunpowder cellar until 1809. Bricks from the ruins of the medieval St. Mary's Church and the bishop's castle walls were used for its construction. Thanks to its thick stone walls and underground location, the building was well-suited for storing gunpowder. Later, the building was used as a beer cellar, and at the end of the 19th century, it was also used by the University of Tartu for scientific research, including studies on earthquakes and magnetic phenomena. From 1982 to 1999, the Gunpowder Cellar operated as a well-known café-restaurant, and in 2000, it reopened as a pub. The Gunpowder Cellar is unique for its 11-meter-high ceiling and is listed in the Guinness World Records as the pub with the highest ceiling. Today, it is a popular meeting place offering good beer, hearty food, and live music in a historical setting.

`Mustjärv` (Black lake) is located 0,5 km to the south of the `Valgejärv` (White Lake) and is larger and a complete opposite to its neighbour. The banks of this forest lake are low, boggy and, especially in the south, difficult to move along. Its waters are acidic, reddish-brown, extremely opaque (transparency is only 0,4 m), and rich in organic elements. Hikers can rest on the banks near a fire or make a picnic in a specially equipped roofed place.

Ala-Rõuge Guesthouse provides affordable accommodation in the heart of Rõuge. The former mill building of the local manor, it dates back to 1885. In the intervening years it served many purposes, but was fully restored as a guesthouse in 1998. It is spacious and the hosts are very welcoming.Just a stone's throw from the guesthouse is Estonia's deepest lake, known as Rõuge Suurjärv, which is perfect for swimming in summer. There are also hiking trails in the surrounding forests. Winter pastimes such as skiing and skating provide fun for all the family. Järvselja nature study trail introduces the forest surrounding the centre of forestry and research. The trail is diverse and passes through a number of forests. Here, you will see the King’s pine (Kuningamänd), which is over 380 years old, as well as spruces that are more than 40 meters high – making them one of the highest trees in Estonia.The trail runs partly on a boardwalk and the route is 1–5 km long. A good starting point is either the Järvselja Hunting Lodge or the guest house, where there are information boards with a map of the trails.Järvselja study trail and the primeval forest represent one of the best locations to discover in Southern Estonia, marked with the yellow frame of National Geographic.

We use the fruits of 9000 apple trees in our apple garden to produce internationally renowned hand crafted ciders, sparkling wines, and non-alcoholic drinks.At our place you can see with your own eyes the journey of an apple picked from a tree to the bottle.During the 1.5-hour factory tour you will visit the production facility, learn about the exciting world of drinks and then you can taste what has been bottled as well.Restaurant KODAS offers exciting flavour experiences and during summer we host open air concerts with well known performers.
