A narrow-gauge Sonda-Mustvee railway passed through Avinurme during 1926–1972. It was a true 50-year-long prosperity era for the villages located near the route. Today, a section of 178.5 metres of the former railway, the rail brigde, and the rail vehicle have been restored. All those who are interested are welcomed to take a nostalgic train ride from May to October, meaning the railway is opened when the weather is warm enough and the door of the locomotive can be opened and the railway is closed when the door of the locomotive freezes shut.

You will find this historicist red-brick church (architect Arved Eichorn), which is the first new church built in the Republic of Estonia, in the peaceful little town Elva. This is why some details of the Elva Church remind of Tartu St John’s Church – the rarely used plaster and brick imitation of a rose window on the western wall of the church refers to the medieval rose window that can be found in Tartu St John’s Church.

Ala Cemetery is not far from Taagepera and the chapel of the first Estonian squire Mats Eredell is located in its southern end. It is also the resting place of Mats’s wife Kärt, son Friedrich Bernhard and another descendant of Mats. Mats Eredell was the owner of the Sõnni Farm in Taagepera. One of his descendants, Hans Erdell, bought the Roobe Manor in 1868. It was one of earliest purchases of its kind in the history of Livonia.Interesting facts: Mats Erdell (1792-1847) was the first Estonian squire.

For spectators, there is a stand seating 396 and a café with a view of the ball games and stadium in the athletics hall.

The patron saint of the Värska Orthodox Church is St. George. The most important church holiday is St. George's Day, which is celebrated in Setomaa on May 6 and culminates with the afternoon kirmaski, or village party. The church was built with money from the community, and the original iconostasis from the beginning of the 20th century has been preserved, part of which is an icon of St. George painted on a tree in the 17th century. The church also has several handmade holy shawls. Värska cemetery is next to the church, and several important Seto cultural figures are buried there.
