Site of the Tamula Ancient Settlement on Roosisaare

Võru vald, Võru maakond, 65534

The horns of ancient cattle, animal bones and other objects found in the lake by Ida Kepnik and Richard Indreko indicated that a stone age settlement was once located here. In 1958, horns together with parts of the skull, ceramics and numerous other objects were found in the course of deepening the Võhandu River and bridge construction. In the summer of 1959, a joint expedition by the Institute of History and the Valga Interregional Local History Museum identified the exact location of the settlement. Using the radiometric dating method, it is estimated that the Tamula settlement is 4500 years old. The connection to Roosisaare peninsula was improved in 1998 when a new suspension bridge was opened for pedestrians. There is a great view of Lake Tamula and the town of Võru from the bridge.

Catherine II Sculpture and Catherine Alley (Katariina allee)

The sculpture of Russian Empress Catherine II (sculptor Jaak Soans) was installed on the renovated Catherine Alley in 2014.The city of Võru was established as the centre of the newly created county under the new Provincial Governance Law of 1784. Catherine II personally gave a number of orders for the founding of a new city and affirmed the coat of arms of the city. The avenue from the first house of Võru town, the main building of the manor belonging to von Mengdens (Võru upper secondary school) to Lake Tamula, is shown on very early maps of Võru city. Adavere manor

Adavere manor was first mentioned in records in the second half of the 17th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Adavere was under the rule of Põltsamaa castle, which governed all of the surrounding land and villages as the most important town in Central Estonia. Its massive slate main building was constructed between 1892 and 1893. The complex also includes outbuildings erected in the late 19th century – a workers' cottage and a barn with a drying shed. Manor park (dating from the 1740s) was one of the grandest in Estonia in its day, although little remains of its glory today. Good to know:* Today, the building is home to Adavere Basic School. During winter, you can go skating in the skating rink on the school stadium.* The manor can only be viewed from the outside.
