The Õrsava Lake Hiking Trail winds around the lake of the same name. The 5 km trail starts officially at the Värska school stadium, but you can start at any point. The lakeside footpath is made more exciting by several bridges. On the shore of Õrsava village there is a campfire site and an RMK bonfire site, as well as a swimming area.In addition to scenic views of nature and pine forests, the hiking trail offers some history: it's partly on the road of the former Estonian Defense Forces Training Center, the so-called , and although the camp was largely dismantled in World War II, some soldiers' barracks and other buildings have been preserved.
Pikasilla recreation area, located in Põdrala rural municipality by the southern tip of Lake Võrtsjärv, is easily accessible and has a strategically good location by a waterway (at the mouth of the River Emajõgi). The place has become well-known as a venue of sports competitions and various public events. The Meremäe Viewing Tower is located between Meremäe village and Vastseliina Castle on Meremäe Hill (204 m). Based on its name, one might think that the sea might be visible from the tower. However, the sea, as we know it today, is about 250 km from here, though Lake Pskov – which is not visible on the opposite side, and which was probably also called a sea in the old days – is just 40 km away. In fine weather, the domes of the churches of the Pskov-Caves Monastery in Pechory can be seen from the tower. The wide view of Setomaa's fields and forests is amazingly beautiful in every season, regardless of the weather. Fifteen people can climb the viewing tower at a time.
Kraine Café-Bakery is located in the Puka borough. The café serves delicious daily meals and soups, a wide selection of pies, cakes, treats, and pretzel-shaped breads, as well as salads and meat products. You can enjoy your food in the café or buy it to go. The café also offers catering for up to 85 people for events and celebrations.
Valgesoo is the smallest but the most fascinating bog in Põlva County; it conceals tiny bog islands, colonies of ants and hiding places of animals. The hike takes place in a nature reserve. In order to protect the surface of the bog, we are going to use bogshoes for hiking. The hike is led by an experienced guide. The route is exciting – it begins in a sandy pine grove, trails across a watery swamp to a raised bog and to the gigantic ant hills of a wood ant colony in an old fir grove. We are going to come back through a low pine forest growing in the bog and cross animal trails on the way. Your guide will talk about the mysterious nature of swamps, folk tales and the fascinating life of bog plants and bugs. If we're lucky, we'll be able to snack on cranberries. You can also have a picnic. Minimum size of the group - 4 people.
The legend speaks about the owner of Roosa manor, who had promised to build a church if he is saved from a shipwreck. When he had happily escaped the sea, he fulfilled his promise and the first church was built in Roosa in 1735.The current church is the third one in Roosa, built in 1893.The massive quarrystone walls have round-headed windows and brick ornaments, the tower has four sides and triangular gables. The altar-piece is a copy of the ″Christ on the Cross” from the St. Mary's Church in Rõuge and the organ is the first church organ the Kriisa brothers built in 1900.
The longest river in Estonia, the Võhandu River, is calm when it reaches Räpina, and therefore it was probably the most suitable place for building a unique mill complex comprising three mills.The flour mill is a massive stone building with a large winch on the top floor for lifting bags. The original doors and many other details integral to the overall design have been preserved. The flour mill was built at the end of the 18th century.
The Upper Härma Wall, also known as Keldri wall, is Estonia's highest Devonian sandstone outcrop. At 150-metres in length, it extends to a height of 19 metres, compared to the valley's edge which reaches a total height of 43 metres. Lower Härma, or Kõlgusniidu Wall, is also close by with a total height of 20.5 metres. Lower Härma, a projecting rock face, is arguably one of the most beautiful walls in the Piusa Ancient Valley, well-known for its brightly coloured layers of clay and majestic pyramid shape. This beautiful area has the added benefit of being host to a fantastic campsite for those wanting to make campfires, located in the meadow at the bend in the river.
