Training/tasting by the Estonian Wine Academy: the basic rules for combining food and wine

Built in 1922, Arabella I is Estonia's oldest continuously operating ship and carries its historical charm to this day. Sailing on Tartu's Emajõgi River, the ship captivates with its elegance and peaceful journey through Old Town and the enchanting nature along the river. On this snowshoe hike, we travel along the historic winter roads of Emajõe-Suursoo with a local guide. These roads were used over 100 years ago and served as direct routes across marshes and bogs. The winter roads connected isolated communities, and people traveled along them by horse to church, the city, neighboring homes, or weddings. Today, these forgotten roads are only used by wild animals. Emajõe-Suursoo is a charmingly wild natural landscape just 45 km from Tartu. On the hike, we will admire several beautiful primeval forest islands in Emajõe-Suursoo, enjoy the winter silence of the bogs, the wild beauty of nature, and the expansive landscapes. We will surely see traces of activity from the local four-legged and winged inhabitants, as the area is rich in wildlife. We make several stops and definitely taste juicy red cranberries straight from the frozen bog. The hike also includes a small snack break of pastries and hot tea! The cathedral located on Tartu's Toome Hill is one of Estonia's most remarkable and largest medieval structures, and the only church with two towers. The church's construction began as early as the 13th century, when Tartu was an important bishopric. Construction work and additions continued into the early 16th century. During the Reformation, the cathedral was abandoned and, over time, turned into ruins. Nevertheless, these powerful walls and spacious vaults remain one of the most outstanding examples of brick Gothic architecture in Old Livonia, reflecting the scale and craftsmanship of medieval architecture. The University of Tartu Museum operates in the cathedral building, showcasing the history of science, university education, and the development of Tartu's academic spirit. It is possible to visit the cathedral towers, which offer one of the most beautiful views of Tartu and the Emajõgi Valley. Next to the towers is Toompood, where you can find gifts, science-themed souvenirs, and memorabilia with university symbols. In the evenings, a light installation adds a magical atmosphere.

Jumalamägi (God's Hill) is an ancient sacred place of the Setos. According to legend, this is where God welcomes souls onto his carriage to take them to heaven.In the past, the hill was a place of only local significance and it seemed like it was a thing of the past, but in 2007, the village elder and the locals once again started using it as a sacred place. A local sculptor R. Veeber built the Peko statue on the hill.People visit Peko* – fertility god of the Setos – before major undertakings for luck and success. They also make sacrifices there. Locals see the statue as a place of positive energy, which is why it is perfect for charging one's batteries.

The host of Mesi Tare will take your group on an adventure to Piirissaar, a small island in Lake Peipsi! We start from the Varnja Harbor, where the host will be waiting with a fishing boat. The boat trip lasts two hours, depending on the weather and water level. We will walk with a guide through Piirissaar's three villages and see all the important places on the island, including the Piirissaare Old Believers Museum, the location of the Old Believers' prayer house, the Orthodox church and the Piirissaare Titanic. For lunch, the guide will take you to Zinaida's home, where she will lay out a magnificent table for her guests. (Note: The food must be paid for on the spot.) The day ends with a boat trip back to Varnja.

We offer a special Instagrammable boat tour starting from Mesi Tare in Varnja, where we divide the group into small boats. The guide is the owner of Mesi Tare, who will captain one of the boats himself. In other boats, you can be the boat captain! We will explore Old Believer villages, sail along the shore, and moor in various small canals to visit places on the shore, including Voronja Gallery, Lendav Laev home restaurant, the Samovar House, Peipsimaa Heritage Center, and other places. The first stone bridge to be constructed in the Baltic States was erected in the 18th century at one end of the Town Hall Square in Tartu, with two triumphal arches and a raisable mid-section. Dedicated to Russian empress Catherine II, it was opened to traffic in 1784. The bridge was destroyed during World War II. All that remains to admire is the 2004 model of the bridge (created by Tiiu Kirsipuu).
