Canoe trip on the Põltsamaa River through Endla Bog

A canoe trip on the Põltsamaa River takes you away from the city directly into the silence of the bog. The Põltsamaa River flows through the Endla Nature Reserve, where views of the authentic bog landscape open up. Nature is constantly changing: water levels, weather, and seasons make each trip unique. During the trip, you can stop and step directly onto the edge of the bog from the canoe to pick cranberries, bilberries, or rare cloudberries. The journey takes you through quiet river stretches, offering real relaxation and the peace of nature. The trip can be chosen as a one-day, two-day, or multi-day adventure. There is an option to make a detour to Lake Endla. A shorter route can be completed at the Kirikumäe campfire site, while the longer route ends at Jõeküla Bridge. If desired, you can continue from there for a multi-day journey. The Põltsamaa River is known for its clear water and is very popular among fishermen. Before or after the canoe trip, it is worth exploring the nearby springs (Norra Springs, Oostriku Springs, Sopa Spring, etc.). A true nature experience awaits — grab a paddle and come discover!

Canoeing on the Kooraste lakes

The Kooraste lakes in the Vidrike-Kooraste primeval valley of the Otepää upland is the most spectacular chain of lakes in Estonia with 11 lakes altogether. The largest and most famous of them is Lake Kooraste Suurjärv, where there is also a small island called Hirvesaar. As we have to pass through ten lakes on this canoe trip, it is suitable for those who are not afraid of challenges and are looking for a true adventure. At times, we have to step out of the canoe and walk next to it. The streams and canals connecting the lakes, the beaver dams, and other obstacles in them make this trip quite difficult. We recommend that you come here in a good mood and wear weather-appropriate clothing.

Canoeing on the upper reaches of the Võhandu River

The upper reaches of the Võhandu River, otherwise known as the Pühajõgi River, are ideal for canoeing if the water is a little higher than the summer average. The natural environment in the area is diverse and interesting, sometimes offering expansive views, other times hemmed in on both sides by trees and forests. There are parts of the river that are rockier and more like rapids, reminiscent of the Ahja River. Here and there you might come across beavers and kingfishers. The trip can be extended by starting from the village of Vidrike and crossing the 11 lakes that make up the Kooraste chain. If you choose this option you can make your hike a two-day one, camping overnight on the shore of Lake Suurjärv.

Võhandu River canoe trip over mill dams and rapids

A canoe trip on the Võhandu River in spring definitely requires previous paddling experience, but it certainly offers an adventure. The river is fast-flowing, with rapids and old mill sites (the most famous are Viira, Süvahavva, and Reo Mills) that demand great attention from the paddler. When descending from the mill dams, the person sitting in the front seat may get a bucketful of crisp water over the canoe sides onto their lap. Capsizing is not uncommon at Viira artificial rapids, but we have considered it and made preparations. The trip organizer provides instructions at the beginning of the trip and serves as a guide from the shore at mill dams and bridge locations, where photos of the paddlers are taken. The river is surrounded by sandstone cliffs. In summer, the water flow is calmer, and certain parts of the river may run low on water. The trip can also be planned as a 2-3 day journey, covering the entire Võhandu Marathon route. With the spring high water, it is possible to complete Estonia's longest downstream waterway, approximately 154 km long. We organize the trip for groups starting from 6 members.
