tARTustays Art Apartments

Our four apartments on Ülikooli Street, right on the edge of Old Town, were created in collaboration with four different Tartu artists: Kairo, Maikro, Ralf Sannikov, and Viktoria Berezina. Each room bears the name of an artist and reflects the character of their creations. In collaboration with Mikrogalerii, we have created a vibrant art experience that extends beyond the apartment walls. You can encounter the works of these authors on the streets of Tartu and in the newly developed creative district Mikro-Venice. tARTu Apartments are an integral part of Tartu's modern art scene. All apartments have contemporary furnishings and are equipped with everything necessary, including WiFi, kitchen utensils, a French press, bed linen, and towels. The washing machine is shared. We offer contactless check-in and local recommendations to truly feel present in tARTu – not as a tourist, but as part of the culture. For us, art is a value, not a decoration. Therefore, we share 10% of our profits with the artists.

St John’s Lutheran Church in Kanepi

St John’s Church is an eye-catching building; its architect was Friedrich Siegel. There is an altar painting Christ on the Cross (A. Bauer, 1857) and a pseudo-Gothic altar, and two nationally protected wooden candlesticks (1810) and an armchair from the birch wood dating from the 18th century. On top of the spire there is a morning star. Interesting to know: St John’s Church in Kanepi was built in 1804-1810 to replace the old wooden church. In 1831 the church was set on fire by lightning. The church in Kanepi has been in its current state since the year 1877.

Otten’s Mill Bridge or the Bridge of Siim

Otten's Mill Bridge is known as the setting for the feature film The Last Relic. This is where Siim blocks the path of his chasers on the bridge and one of the chasers' horses falls into the river. The mill bridge, which also worked as a mill dam, was built by Jaan Otten, the owner of the mill, in 1916, following the example of the Tartu Stone Bridge. The water channel with a bridge built of quarrystone has only partially survived. The dam of the watermill is built of quarrystone and it has two large concrete arches that could be closed with gates.Otten's Mill Bridge is the border of the Ahja River Primeval Valley Nature Protection Area. The bridge is also entered in the state register of cultural monuments.

Gallery/store of Loov Energia Keraamikahoov

Loov Energia Keraamikahoov is a mysterious place. The entrance, which is made from red bricks, between a low row of bushes, located opposite the old Torma schoolhouse, leads to a somewhat unique yard, where you will find a lovely shop. There, you can learn different ceramic techniques and groups can make something on their own (upon pre-booking). If you wish, you can try to make a small souvenir from clay. The pottery by Erika Aas is special because despite the artist’s creativity, her work is practical and suitable for any interior and coffee or lunch table.

Blind embossing is a printing technique where a linoleum block is printed without color, leaving only a relief mark on the paper. In the workshop, each participant will make a linoleum block (10x15 cm) according to their own design. To prepare, it is a good idea to think through your design in advance or search for an image online for inspiration. Check out more exciting print and paper art workshops on our website!
